Tretton responds to Activision price cut debate

Posted on December 17th, 2007 at 07:05 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO and President, Jack Tretton, has criticised Activision for suggesting that both Sony and Microsoft need to lower the price of their next-generation consoles in order to stimulate sales.

Tretton was specifically referring to Activision CEO Robert Kotick, who said last month that he expects the PS3 and Xbox 360 to retail for USD 199 in two years time. However, Tretton sees Kotick’s suggestions as “unrealistic.”

"I'm surprised by it, because I would never venture to suggest what software publishers should price their software at”, he said."So I don't think it's appropriate for them to suggest what hardware should be priced at."

Still, he said that publishers should be focused on Sony’s efforts as much as their own, highlighting the fact that third party's cannot function without hardware to publish their games on.

"I think from an unrealistic standpoint I'm never surprised by that, because a software manufacturer may not be concerned whether a hardware manufacturer is successful or whether they're profitable.

"But I think they should be, because without the hardware manufacturer, the software manufacturer has nothing to publish on."

Concluding, Tretton addressed Kotick once more, suggesting bluntly that if he disliked the way Sony is currently pursuing its business, "maybe he should design a platform."

I dunno, keeping the price point above 'allowance' levels keeps a good number of kids out of the online mix. That's good news to me *shrug*

The console is not expensive the games are the ones which kill you £50 for a game when you can get the console for £250

The quote Tretton makes in paragraph 3 is exactly what I was thinking when I first heard about this. Sony doesn't tell Activision how to much to sell their games for, so AV just needs to STFU and make games.

The cost of a new sony ps3, over the next couple of years, will come down in price. Cost of a new game, in the next couple of years  will stil be £45 - £50. So why don't you follow your own suggestion you sellfish tw@.

Don't see anything wrong with Trettons comments..."he expects the PS3 and Xbox 360 to retail for USD 199 in two years time", isn't dictating how much he thinks Sony/MS should sell the consoles, it's just an assumption due to natural reactions to sales figures.  He's right, in two years, those that really want one of these machinse will have one, so they'll be competing for the market that aren't that bothered- and won't pay the current price.  What's wrong with that?

Well, we've had some price cuts.  Activision's statement is 2 months old and after November close to 2 million units sold ago.  I don't think they'll be complaining too much after xmas.

I think was Tretton SHOULD have said, instead of sounding kinda rude, is:

"We understand that install base is an important issue for a publisher to create their games off of, but we would rather they concentrate on making their games while we concentrate on our own costs and install base issues."

People need to stop being cheap. 399 seems like a steal to me considering I bought my 60g at 599. I think the ps3 has a decent enough install base for its first year.

so does this mean activision is going to start selling their games at $29.95? if not then he needs to shut up and make quality games and leave the hardware companies alone. i've seen price drops in consoles, when is the last time we have seen the software developers drop their prices?

Good job Tretton! MAybe Activision would like to stop over charging for there games. I think that 19.99 is the sweet spot for games pricing.

I'm actually still pissed that they raised the price on games. "so much money to develop" wah wah! Then why is it that PC only games like Crysis is $49.99? Could'nt be cheap to develop that game and it isn't even being sold on consoles!!!! What the???? That game should cost $150.00 by their reasoning.

Nice! Way to stick up for yourselves, Sony!

But still, we need some serious advertising on our side, let's keep pumping out the 40Gb as a Blu Ray player with hardcore games, and the 80Gb as a hardcore game system with Blu Ray. That was the best thing Sony ever did, now they just advertise the helI out of it.

I really don't see the point, where tretton is coming from,Kotick just made an assumption, that he hopes that technological advanements, will make the hardware cheaper,so there are more ppl to buy THEIR games, sounds like tretton is REALLY UNDER PRESSURE,which is by the way bad for business.
