Treyarch doesn't rule out more WWII based CoD

Posted on October 16th, 2008 at 12:04 EDT

Treyarch has admitted that there may still yet be another World War II based edition in the popular Call of Duty franchise, despite the fact the developer is happy to “end the war” with the upcoming fifth instalment in the series.

Speaking with CVG, World at War Senior Producer Noah Heller commented: “I can’t say that there won’t ever be a WWII Call of Duty game again, but we’re glad we were able to end the war and we’re glad we’re going to support the title with lots of downloadable content.”

“It’s gratifying that we’re able to show the close for once, rather than the opening,” he said, adding, “The war is over and both campaigns have a very clear ending.”

Holler also expressed his interest in being able to depict the end of the Second World War from the perspective of other countries, admitting there are still many stories left untold.

“If we had time we might have shown the end of the war from many different country’s perspectives, and maybe that’s a story still untold,” he said.

“But in the meantime people definitely haven’t seen the final charge of the Red Army, people haven’t seen what the fighting was like in Okinawa and I think it’s definitely important to show those stories from a polished perspective rather than show some of the mopping up elsewhere in the world.”

Call of Duty: World at War is due out this November on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360.

VIETNAM VIETNAM VIETNAM!!!!  Somebody please, next time you see the COD people for an interview, or at a convention, scream "VIETNAM WAR!!!" in their face.  W.W.II is frickin' boring.  Once they were great, but they have overflooded the market with the things.  Greatest Generation, okay, I get that.  Nazis were bad, okay, I get that.  It's just that there are enough games based on W.W.II that W.W.II could be declared it's own gaming genre.  What part of "Everyone is bored with W.W.II games" that these people don't get?  Do they read gamer feedback?  You could make the best game in the world and set it during W.W.II and still lose a lot of customers simply because they don't want another W.W.II game.  It doesn't matter what "perspective" you give it; it's still W.W.II, with the same W.W.II guns, and W.W.II soldiers, and W.W.II bombed out European buildings, and IS BORING!   If you want a different "perspective" on W.W.II, read a book!  Remember, one of the benefits of your grandpa crawling through mud and guts all those years was so you could read books instead of burn them.

WWII went for six years, and involved all sorts of situations that make for pretty good, intense gaming - I think Treyarch (if not rushed) could easily make some more great games for it.  Granted, if WW2 shooters were all that anyone released, it'd get stale, but there's always Resistance, GRAW, R6V one and 2, COD4 and the upcoming Killzone and Operation Flashpoint 2 to mix it up a bit.  That said, I think some other conflicts would be interesting, although @ ephracis, I suspect Bosnia is just a bit too fresh to turn into a game just yet. @ bracomadar, COD4 was far from the first time I'd run around with an M4A1 taking out Russian extremists (SOCOM, amongst others), but it was still fun - it's pacing, story, AI and underlying tech (physics, graphics, lighting) that a great game make, and there's plenty of varied scope left in WW2 for that.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the CoD games up to 4, and also several of the Medal of Honor series... but I'm tired of WW2 now. Hopefully the rumours that Infinity Ward are working on a future war - or 'sci-fi shooter' - are true. I think I'm going to pass on World at War.

yeah well it might be different if we gloriously won the Vietnam war. WWI and WWII were the last great wars that ment something to this country. I know you want to use different weapons but nam usually leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths. I'm not saying dont make it. if its good I'm there but you gotta think of the biiiig picture. btw Resistance kicks a  ss way cool to mix old with sci-fi.

alright this is getting ridiculous, don't you guys get bored doing the same thing? i know i do. if you guys dont start being more creative you're never going to be able to get out of infinity wards shadow, try a different war at least jeez, try vietnam, that one hasnt really been utilized and it should be

or as others said, let us play as a nazi ore something use some creative license and give it a little fictional twist, at the very least be more creative with the WW2 subject matter

We  got our asses kicked in Vietnam. Why would you want to play a game where you just die repetitively? I agree that WWII is old. But I don't think Vietnam is the place to go.

cod2 was excellent and cod3 was flawed but enjoyable. i'm tempted to play this, at least a demo and maybe a rent before buying. playing another ww2 games is not the most appealling granted, but if the perspective were changed then it could be very good. at least in terms of variation.

If they really want to go original in the WW2 genre, they could always make a game where you play the Nazis, spend your time bombarding england, make d-day fail, put an end to all frech resistance plans, invade the U.S and take over the world hahaha, sorry, just got a bit carried away! Put like this, it would be better as a rts game or why not a mix between rts and fps!
