Treyarch has lofty ambitions for Call of Duty 5

Posted on June 23rd, 2008 at 08:42 EDT

Treyarch’s Richard Farrelly has gone on record to state that the developer is looking to make the upcoming fifth instalment in the highly successful Call of Duty franchise the “best game ever made.”

“We knew we had to approach the WWII genre different as it was getting a little stretch,” said Farrelly, during an interview with MCV.

“We had to hit the reset as to what people would expect from it. We took a lot of tips from the success of Modern Warfare, in terms of how they presented the game, the pacing, the different approach for the music and the way the characters speak in the game… right down to the level of maturity of the content. Which really sets a different tone for any WWII game.”

“We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. But a two year cycle now enables us to test the game and make sure what goes in the game is real quality. We want to make the best game ever made,” he said.

Call of Duty: World at War returns to the familiar World War II setting depicted in the first three titles of the critically acclaimed FPS series, with the game set predominantly in the Pacific theatre and Eastern front of the war.

World at War is currently in development for PlayStation 3, PC, Wii and Xbox 360 and scheduled for release by the end of publisher Activision’s 2009 fiscal year.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

I know some of you are looking forward to this and the rest of you hate it (I'm in the hate it camp). I really don't care what "Lofty Ambitions" they have. I think when people dont run out and buy this game like crazy, Activision will get the picture.

Aslong as they jave enough time, and make it epic, I'm happy. Great story is a must, maybe two different ones? American one, and Japanese one perhaps? This game will still sell ridiculously well, after all, it is Call of Duty.

don't really care what you try to swing in the game...adding a flamethrower n climbing coconut trees (where you can then get killed by oh....anyone who saw you)doesn't make it a good game..plus it's another ww11 game..blah pass psn:natakou

So let me get this straight, I'll try to understand their thinking: They get worlwide praise for Modern Warfare. Why? Because it was different and innovative, gameplay and storywise. Adding to this, the fans' displeasure at CoD3. So for the follow up, they go back to the WW2 genre that has been washed out years ago and bored most of the FPS crowd? Amazing! You gotta love the retards at Treyarch!

I would never discourage a developer from trying to create "the best game in the world", even if I didn't like them.

I'm glad they have lofty ambitions, it's what more developers need.

But there's definitely no reason for me to pick this game up over Killzone 2 or Resistance 2. There's too many amazing exclusives coming up, they would have to do something massively out of the ordinary to catch our attention.

I would not pay $60+tax for a COD3+2 mod. This guys must be thinking that gamers are morons.

Man, I thought they would at least have the common sense to set 100% of the game in the Pacific Theater.  Oh no...let's put part of the game in Europe to satisfy that .00001% of the gaming population who hasn't killed Nazis in a video game before.   You know what would have been better choice than a Europe campaign?  A campaign set in Alaska...it happened.  Set W.W.II in South America, on the moon, or a secret Japaneses underwater base!  At least it hasn't been done before.  At this point, I would rather them throw all historical accuracy out the window instead of dealing with more European Theater!!!

@ AdamDW.... how about WW2 setting for starters? Anyways...I am not hating on the developers or the looks of the game...it can be just as good as COD4, but the whole WW2 is just not my style. And the BS about COD6 being sci-fi isn't gonna go over too well with me either (even if IW is making it).

@ Xdeth: The entire COD series has always sold pretty well, and Im sure this one will too, even after COD3, because the average customer isn't aware of Activision juggling developers with the series. I'm sure its probably been said before, but I think this whole process is a money-maker for Activision, using the publics ignorance and such. Infinity Ward is there to make the truly quality names in the series, which gets the name out there, along with some great review scores. Then, for less money, they throw in Treyarch to make a sequel that will be half as good, yet make just as much money (because of all the people unaware of the switch in developers).

As for "best game ever", honestly, I like the optimism, and I hope its actually used as a driving force when they are making this game, but when "best game ever" comes to mind, can you really imagine seeing a FPS with that claim to fame, no less a WW2 FPS? Really?

Its Treyarch so I predict, (Drum Roll).................................. no higher than and 8. I would be ashamed if I made games like they did CoD3 was absolutely horrible.

i encourage people to look at this game with an open mind because no one has really done WW2 right yet give them a chance this is where they can prove themselves as devs

If there ambitions were to make the best game ever, wouldn't that give them a reason to not make anymore? XD Pfft go backing on tried and true scenario's speak more in terms of renovation then innovation.

Erm!!! SEAl72 have you any idea what so ever? have you ever played any call of duty game apart from cod4 on ps3? i have i have them on PC, and i know what games the people from infinity ward are responsible for, from the early days of medal of honour on PC to cod4 because ive played them all. and i know what games they are capable of making, and this my friend call of duty 5 from Treyarch, is not going to be any where like cod4, the game play is just going to be naff as well of the graphics.

They should make a call of duty in primitive times. Cutting people with carved stone and crappy bow and arrows and bow and arrow with poison or something. Smashing people's head with stone. Maybe just aboriginal type of call of duty. Even better American Indians vs. American Indians vs. Incas vs Mayans but I guess Call of Duty isn't about that. I know! Call of Duty in Russia during Cold War times going Commando or even Vietnam! I don't know about this WW2 stuff anymore you know? I'm not going to buy the game for one new weapon even though it's cool. I'm with the people who say it's overdone and tiring. The characters don't even look as cool as those in Modern Warfare.

well i will be glad to see all the kids and idiots leave the series to those of us that actually enjoy ww2 games. we only have a few and you guys stole it from us with this pathetic game cod4. a game where you customize your weapons so that a mp5 has sniper rifle accuracy and no weapons are even needed to be aimed because you just shoot from the hip with steady aim and all is good....oh and my very very favorite two perks the juggernaut + lag = invincible and the i suck but still kill you because i have marterdom. cod4 is  a joke of a game. it is made for the masses where a 7 year old, 1st time player, and a veteren online player are all equal because they dumb down the game mechanics. i loved all the cod franchise before...sure some weren't as good as others but they almost always had the gunfiring mechanics down pat....it actually took gaming skill to shoot people. leave modern warfare for socom, tom clancy, and battlefield and the hundred other modern fps. cod has and should always be a ww2 game. the only thing better than this game going back to ww2 is the fact that it should be released in early (2010) because 4th quarter 2009 runs into 2010 financially for companies. that means the next cod modern warfare game could come no earlier than 3 years away....lol SWEET!!!!
