Uncharted Developer talks Award System and SPU Usage

Posted on October 30th, 2007 at 22:25 EDT

In an interview with PALGN, Naughty Dog game designer Evan Wells talked about the Upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive, Uncharted. In the interview, Wells reveals much about the game including its length, quest, and why the game is perfect only for the PS3. Some of the key features revealed are as followed:

-    First play-through should last 10-12 hours.
-    There will be four levels of difficulty.
-    There are 60 little treasures hidden throughout the game to keep the gamer immersed for hours on in, expanding the length of the game’s experience.
-    Rumble is built right into the game.

"We've also put into the game a medal system, so as you're playing the game if you perform special feats you'll get medals, such as getting a certain number of headshots, getting a certain number of headshots in a row, killing people, doing a special brawl combo, just lots of things along the way that will unlock the medals. The medals then contribute to your overall medal score and your medal scores then feed into our bonus system which allows all of the unlockables to be unlocked.” said Evan Wells.

The medal system that Wells talks of is expected to turn into a trophy system once Home comes out. To continue on, Wells tells why the PlayStation 3 was the better platform to develop Uncharted on. He stated that the standard drive gives opportunity to create a seamless, load free world and that because of the help from Blu-ray, they are able to squeeze the 24GB game into one single disc. Wells further went on to say that the Cells processor served as a handy tool for compiling all of Nathan’s (The game’s lead character) 3,500 animations. Ending it out, Wells had this to say, “As far as the Cell processor and the SPU's are concerned we were only using about 1/3 to 1/2 of the SPU's at one time and so there is still quite a bit more we can do."

Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony, Uncharted is an adventure game with many search and exploration aspects built into it. The story puts gamers in the shoes of Nathan Drake, a modern day fortune hunter whom becomes stranded on a remote island after trying to explore the treasure of El Dorado. Drake is not alone on the island however, as mercenaries and other obstacles of all sorts tries to post-pone an plans that Drake may have of getting off the island alive.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is set to release on the PS3 exclusively in North America on November 20th, Australia November 9th, and Europe in November.

I think this will be the first game that shows the PS3 power.   Like the article said,  this game cannot be on any other system, except for PC (I presume).  So much detail was put into this game like no other game on any platform.  I will be picking this game up first day.

It would be good if you could upgrade the memory a bit - 512Mb shared system & graphics must be a big limit. I cant see why at least 512GB or 1GB for the system and 512GB video memory cant be offered as an aftermarket upgrade.

To put it into perspective; my PC is now fitted with Quad Cores @ 3.33GHz & 8Mb L2 cache, 4GB fast memory upgradeable to 32GB and a video card with 768MB dedicated Video memory (upgradeable to two cards in SLI @ with 1.5GB). I'm being told that two socket 8 cores is going to be the norm by 2009. Holy crap batman! The day after buying my 8800GTX I heard that a NVidia 9800 card comes out in Feb next year with near twice the spec / performance as my 8800...That's serious horsepower

You didn't mention the part that made me want to buy the game.   Oh that's right,  because its rediculous.  I forgot :]  Thank  you for reminding me.  And Cleaner, I don't know where you get your information, but the only new cards Ive heard about are the 8800 GT and the ati 670 or whatever.  Which will be a little less powerful than your 8800 and cost 250$.  Coming around the date you said. and whoever told you 2 socket 8 cores will be norm by 2k9  is retarded.  It's hard to max out even a quad core right now if you didnt notice

@ The Cleaner.. aftermarket memory upgrades for the PS3 (or any console) would defeat the purpose of a videogame console altogether. Consoles are developed with definite, non-upgradable system specs (well, except for hard drives apparently) so game developers know that every console owner has the exact same specs and can tailor the game to those specs. Giving people the ability to change those specs after market would totally screw the developers. Why would they design a game to need more memory than what comes in the box if they have no idea how many people could actually support it?

This is game IMO will determine why consumers start to migrate over and buy a PS3. Their exclusives are way more intriguing then the XBOX 3 shi**y. The future of the PS3 is looking really bright, this is going to be a great holiday season!!!

Socket - I totally agree that the Intel Quads are way more than I need - my CPU is at 25% even with the Crysis demo.

The guy who I was speaking with works at AMD and he was saying that both Intel & AMD plan to phase out Dual Core CPU's so Quad Cores would be the starting point over the next year. He then pointed out the number of manufacturers building dual socket motherboards designs for the desktop area and he made the comment that by 2009 it will be fairly cheap to pickup two bottom of the range Quads instead of a single top of the range Quad or Eight way CPU. The bottom of the range he was talking about would basicly be the one Ive got now.

As for the new 9800 - Ive done some Googling and its all rumor at this point. Only reason I give it some thought is again it came from a reliable source at Dell in Singapore. He says the "9800" rumors are pretty close to the mark. He says the new crop of graphic cards wont be another incrimental step but are substantially more capable than current designs.

I wish other developers who have had games come out in the second half of the year added an award system for Home.
