"Uncharted will be a franchise," says Naughty Dog

Posted on October 31st, 2007 at 11:58 EDT

Christophe Balestra, Co-Vice President of Naughty Dog, has hinted that the company plans to create a sequel for its forthcoming Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, suggesting it would be a “waste” if the team did not do so.

"Crash was a franchise, Jak & Daxter was a franchise and yes of course Uncharted will be a franchise," said Balestra, in an interview with website Opposable Thumbs.

"It takes a lot of effort to create a universe like Uncharted and there is so much more we want to do. It would be a waste if we didn't have a sequel to make it even better than the first one."

Elsewhere, he claimed that the title utilizes only "30 percent" of the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor, hinting that the follow up will look even more visually impressive.

"We already have very sophisticated technology and we'll push to the next level for our next game," he stated.

Balestra further added that he feels some companies are experiencing difficulties when developing for the PS3, but remained firm that Sony is aiding third party’s as much as possible.

"I think the PS3 is the machine of the future, the transition might not be super easy but Sony knows and is helping third-party developers”, he said.

“If you look at other industries we just have to deal with a multicore processor and in companies like Google programmers probably deal with thousands of machines, so in terms of complexity I think it's totally manageable."

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is due out exclusively on PS3 from November 20.

30% of the ps3's power  amazing ... cant wait to see what 90% does for nex gen gaming...      i think either  INSOMNIAC OR NAUGHTY   are gonna be the first ones to get to at least 90% of the power of the mighty ps3.

Nice to hear that some guys still have balls.

If the other lazy people would just try figuring out how the ps3 works, they could make some great stuff too. Like the man said, it might not be easy but its not impossible.

The most important part of this article is the fact that it's positive press for the PS3.  We need to see more of it prior to the holidays.  I'm also quite excited to see we're getting a franchise out of this.  It must be good.

Looking forward to scooping this one up, I loved the Tomb Raider series (not for the juggies but it was a plus lol) and looking at this game it brought back some old school feel. =)

You're right "Spearhead" PS3 needs the positives now that holidays are around the corner, with games like COD4 and Assassin's Creed coming out. These two alone should be identical if not better then the 360's.  Also Ratchet already came out and it did great, the game is awesome.  Uncharted is already being praised as the prettiest game ever on any console period.  So when I hear only 30% which is really about 18-20 Gigs being used is great news because that means there's alot of RAW power that has not yet been tapped on our PS3's. Also for those of you who do not know, HAZE was shown to public last week, and the only negatives is that it needs to be polished, some texture and lighting needs to be fixed a bit.  Besides that, the game is supposedly non-stop action, "thick and fast", "keeps you on your toes".  Watchout HALO.  as for 360 they only have masseffect as an exclusive, but we'll have 3 within a month! I think HAZE will be the sleeper hit for the PS3 simply because we know Ratchet was gonna be great and IS great, and we know that Uncharted will BLOW people away, but no one seems to be paying attention to HAZE.  I think it will be better if not just as good as RFOM! Good day my PS3 brothers.  P.S. "Spearhead" :    GO DALLAS! lol

yes! nice to here uncharted is going to be a franchise, hes right it would be a waste not to make this awesome story into a sequel. Uncharted already looks like top notch graphics so i cant even beleive how good the second one will look. Sony has the games, there just not quite here.

Hmmm...Drake could be Sony's second mascot ( No.1 being Ratchet&Clank )

Hopefully In the second Uncharted there will be Online play AND 2-player xD
