Universal Studios have announced that they will not be making any HD DVD title announcements at CES 2008. This goes hand in hand with the fact that Paramount/Dreamworks have also decided to not make any announcements as well.
This news becomes huge considering that last year, HD DVD supporting studios felt no problems in being able to announce a slew of upcoming titles for the format they were backing. However, with recent reports of Paramount wavering, though denied from the company, one can only speculate what is really going on behind closed doors. The announcement that Universal is taking this same road of silence is more than deafening. Silence is one thing, no comments are a whole other story.
It seems Warner’s announcement to back Blu-ray exclusively has done nothing but shake the very foundation of the HD DVD encampment. We feel that this has obviously started the ticking clock of death for HD DVD. It’s only a matter of time until you can find HD DVD’s in the bargain bin, if you even want to call it that.

Fatality
Fatality
hope this war will take end fastly as possible as
When does Universal's contract expire with HD-DVD? Is it already? Eitherway, I'm sure they have escape clauses too, but I'm just curious.
So Dave are you saying that HD-DVD movies will likely become more cost effective than Bluray? In other words films on Bluray might not be price competitive now that HD-DVD will go on sale... Ummm maybe they should think of dropping the price of Bluray to keep up then.
Dave you are a goose.
bill hunt at The Digital Bits says the Universal contract ends at the end of January and his sources say they may make an Announcement about going Blu-ray by February. That site gets a lot of insider news.
Universal didn announce anything about hd-dvd release because obviously they hav none because tey are planning behind closed doors the move 2 blu-ray!!!! COME ON GINGO LETS SEE YA!!
Dave stop posting those small stories you come with, and bring some real news.
I understand your reasoning dave and I'm pretty sure the cleaner did as well, he is just giving you a hard time.
And chartwel, the digital bits have always been very pro blu ray. I am wary of any news side that has a clear bias, even it its for the product I like.
DaveW why spam these Bluray "stories" come on you can do better. Are you paid on a quota for PR snippets that you get published? Mate this site needs more than that otherwise it will never gain credibility.
Your response to my calling you a goose was measured so I dont count you a fool. I only hope you push the boundries here a little - if only for your own career.
PS Im amazed I got a response - this site is mostly unmoderated.
psn id: gingo....alright, alright we get it already HD DVD is dead, theres only a certain amount of one story you can take in a week
I really hope that the format war ends soon because if that happend, with all the money Sony is gonna receive for their Blu players and for the movie licensing, they will eventually have enought cash to lower the price for the PS3 even more, making it a HOT SELLING item, which will lead the console to a first (or second) place in the console war.
I understand DaveW - and dont worry your not the only person on the editorial team I've slammed. Trust me you got it lightly...
Who owns the PSU site anyway?
It's like Blu-ray accidentally did a babality when they WANTED to do a fatality. Now we have to sit through the little scene of HD-DVD turning into a miniature version of itself in diapers before the match is over.... yawn....
I did hear someone say that HD-DVD would most likely die a sudden death rather than slowly be phased out. I have a feeling that the format war will be over in a few months.
yes the faster this war is over the faster i can have transformers on blu-ray
Not exactly the story of the CES but it is at least nice to see the writer interact with the comments rather than the occasional "Oops, typo. Will fix."
...and DaveW...."the product is only as strong as the consumers!"
"Like any war in history...it ends when there is nobody else to fight/kill or it ends when the majority chooses one side or chooses to side with their enemy. The latter way...everyone wins...eventually."
(*_*)(*_*) lmao!!(^_^)
sweet!
Give DaveW some slack you guys. I for one didnt know about this small but valuable news. I like this article Dave it's a small snipet of the bigger picture. Also thanks for actually reponding to us, it sometimes feels like no one reads our comments.
Their silence is deafening. We all know what's about to happen.
great news for bluray owners like meeeeee. oh well sucks for all of the hd-dvd owners should of gone with sony.
As long as this retarded war ends, I could careless. Got a PS3 for collateral. XD
"Wow, look honey. It's Brad Pitt"
"How's it going guys? Mam, could I interest you in having sex with a hot movie star. Yes, I'm referring to myself. As long as your husband doesn't mind."
"What are you nuts Brad! My wife would NEVER sleep with you!!! Isn't that right sweetheart..."
"..."
"ISN'T THAT RIGHT HONEY!"
"..."
Silence is golden. No news is good news. In a case like this (and the one above) if you think you're dead.
Let's just hope Toshiba can let go of HD-DVD,and not delay the inevitable with another contract.@DaveW
It's really nice to see atleast you joining us in the comments section and 'interacting' with the members, and keep up the good work, this CES coverage is very well done,i hope you guys keep up this sort of quality.
