Killzone 2 only using 60% of SPU's overall power?
New Killzone 2 footage: Ambush, Boss Fight, and moreFor anyone who has followed PlayStation Universe’s coverage of Blu-ray would understand just how much the format is dominating the market over HD-DVD.
It seems as if every other day some type of retailer or studio is announcing their full 100% allegiance to the Blu-ray format. In a sense, it is like a forgone conclusion that Blu-ray will or possibly has already one this format war. Not to jump to conclusions however, we will just give it more time before the victor is declared.
With that being said, there is always the spoiler that has to put a damper on things. In this situation, that nod goes to Universal. In an interview with Pocket-Lint.co.uk, Universal executive, Ken Graffeo, revealed that they have no plans on supporting Blu-ray.
“We want to be able to market all the great things HD DVD can offer consumers. We couldn’t do this if we split our resources on two formats, hedged our bets and had to avoid over promoting features on one format so we wouldn’t undercut the other format. HD DVD allows us to provide the type of quality and truly next generation experiences we need to get consumers to migrate from DVD.”
He later went on to downsize the PlayStation 3’s ability to play Blu-ray DVDs by saying, “70% of gamers don’t even know that their console has a DVD playback option." Graffeo then further added that HD-DVD players this holiday season will be as low as USD 199 assuming that a lower price should make consumers purchase a HD-DVD player over a Blu-ray player. Graffeo concluded: "the PS3 simply hasn’t been the gamer changer Sony had hoped it would be."
There isn’t much that can be done except to point out the numbers of Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Hopefully as Blu-ray becomes more successful, maybe Universal will take a different stance on the situation.

wow. thanks for making this war last even longer you dush. if you suported bluray you wouldn't have to spred your resources, the war would be over and you would save a lot of people time and money.
70%?? forget about it
Universal, and Paramount are just prolonging the inevitable, and alot of financial losses for backing a failing format. I was in Gamestop just today, and the dad with the teenage son, said "We should get the High definition player for your Xbox" Without missing a beat, the teenage son fired back, "No point, it is going to fail and you will be able to buy a blu-ray player cheap by this time next year" Smart kid, I gave him a high five...not really.
Sony's mission = pwn HD-DVD it make sure the numbers are 100% ownage on Graffeo's statement about Blu-ray. He's essentially downplaying gamers as "techy-info lacking" individuals which is a big no no in my book. Show's a great example of poor mudslinging. :/
jeses christ!!!! wtf is wrong with everyone?
Just admit that blu-ray has won. This is just proof that there are really dumb people out there i wouldnt mind if they shoot themselfs. And i hate it when these people lie about people not knowing what their ps3 can do.How can u avoid it u cant everyone knows that it has a bd player. And why is this guy choosing hddvd is he crazy?
What would Graffeo know about games?! Movies are his business, not games! He hears misinformed rumour spreaders about disknowledged PS3 owners who are not aware about the other amazing functions the machine has to offer! They'll soon realise though. Additionally, not many have SACD's, but that format is also compatible with 60gb and 80gb models. Not sure about the 40gb though, never really looked into it. Not that I know anyone with SACD's.
70% of people not knowing about the PS3's Blu-ray playback versus however many Xbox 360 owners having the HD-DVD drive add-on or a separate HD-DVD player. They'd save time, effort and money by siding with Sony and Blu-ray.
The sheer difference in sales numbers of Blu-ray and HD-DVD speaks loud enough. Why are they still promoting the more inferior and less successful format? Blu-ray keeps getting bigger; isn't that obvious?
HD-DVD are just plugging their ears right now and going "lalalalala, we can't hear you!" Universal just decided to go down with the sinking ship.
I have neaver in my life heard about anyone that doesnt know that both PS2 & PS3 can play DVD!!! This man is a joke! The only point he has is that the HD-DVD players is cheaper(thats just probably because the hd-dvd camp tryes to get rid of the last players before the intrest for it totaly ends). Apart from the pricepoint off the players right now, the hd-dvd has nothing that blu-ray cant do as good or better. Blu-ray has room for more HD-video content on one disc (special when the 100GB Blu-Rays comes out), so why choose a inferior format? Blu-Ray is selling much more movies than HD-DVD does, so why cant universal just drop the suport for the inferior format so this war can end like NOW! Universal you doesnt help the consumers, you just cause more confusion and insecurity! You have the power in your hands to stop that confusion but you choose to do the opposite! Why do you counteract standardize of Blu-Ray when thats the format consumers obviously want!?
This makes sense since they are the primary supporter of HD DVD I am pretty sure they make the most money off of HD DVD sales.
Talk to us again after you get that Thoshiba C ock out of your @s s Graffeo
85% of hd-dvd owners don't even know, they can play hd-DVD movies.
This is honestly RIDICULOUS... I DONT KNOW ONE PS3 owner that doesnt know they can play BD... honestly, ANYONE that buys such an expensive machine would want to know exactly what it can offer... its jus bizzare!! and ON THE FRICKIN MANUAL and on the XBL it says BD/DVD... the fact that someone doesnt know what it means is impossible.
They are lying, PEOPLE DO KNOW!
wait what? there is consumers for HD DVD?
Come on, why can't the studios just do the monopoly and let on of the two win. Better Sony then Toshiba, because Sony actually makes moves! And Blu-Ray is better!
common people we cant get mad at the statement he made he doesn't know because he is not a gamer. So how can somebody who doesnt live the life of a gamer make such a comment is his downfall. I can say that he stands by his beliefs so be it, i dont blame him the war is far from over. So when the war ends one of us will look like asses either bd or hd-dvd. Right now its pointing towards hd-dvd.
I don't get where they come up with these crazy figures like 70% of gamers aren't aware of DVD playback. That might be the case with every console out there, but no way near the ps3 population. The fact the many ps3 bundles come w/ a blu-ray movie should ensure that more than 2/3 of ps3 owners actively use their console for movies.
Someone seriously needs to redo that survey because it's complete nonsense! If anything it;s more like 70% DO know they can play movies on their consoles. because one of the biggest reason why DVD took hold is because of it's inclusion in the last generation of systems!!!! HDDVD keeps falling back on that argument and it needs to be DEBUNKED!
He's just spewing his company line, doing his job. They'll finish out the commitment that hd-dud payed for and then change their tune.
psn id: gingo.... this made me laugh how come universal are one of the only studios that cant see blu ray is killing all the other competition in the hd market
HD-DVD people keep tossing around these numbers about PS3 owners not knowing about Blu-Ray playback, but where in the heck are they getting these numbers? Some market research company obviously just polled the idiots in their office and are calling them "gamers".
I feel bad for this guy because his a** is going to get fired soon.
99% of 360 owners will not buy an HD-DVD add on and 33% are still watching tv till the 360 comes back from the shop, 100% ps3 owners know about blu-ray, and 2% of the industry supports Hd-DVD compared to 98 % support for blu-ray, and I don't have to do not one survey to know these numbers are closer to the truth than what any stiff collar, board meeting, lifetime watching, miata driving when you know no one 5'2" or higher should not be in- has to say about any gamer or what a gamer is aware of,wtf is wrong with him these guy don't even play a game ask this lame does he know about kush or purple and it's a wrap!
i can tell u guys more than 70% who owns an xbox dont even own an hd dvd
Sounds more like he is making excuses because if he is wrong, he deserves to get sack.
....and he is wrong by the way.
KCgonewild and Playing Beyond Today: Both very good points. Im sure that the 70% refers to the percentage of PS3 owners who arent aware of its many functions. Universal is just assuming that it means they dont know it can play DVD, even though there is a big a ss Blu Ray symbol on the front of the box..lol
Since we are playing around with %s, heres one. I see that at least 70% of games that came out for the 360 before 2008 will come out with PS3 versions next year and take advantage of the disc space by adding extra content. What do u think??
Bull what a load of bull. They know they lost and they dont want to admit to it.
i hate it when third-party CEO's talk like fanboys. i'd expect talk like this from either Sony or Toshiba, as both have a huge stake in Blu-ray and HD-DVD respectively. but Universal's position should be neutral, as they wouldn't have been any worse for wear had they chosen Blu-ray over HD-DVD. had they chosen Blu-ray, it would've be yet another nail in this war's coffin, a war that hasn't benefited the consumer in the least. now, it just means that things will be prolonged, which seriously sucks for the consumer.
ok u want the best possible experience then why does hd dvd have only a 1080i possibility. oh and what does blu ray have oh yes i almost forgot a 1080p. seems like a waste to me with a better ratio and plus funny thing if u check blu ray is cheaper then hd dvd so one more time for me and my idiot fellow ps3 and bluray backers wear the he11 is this value?
does he think 5 year olds play videogames? does he think that we dont read about our system before we buy it? that arrogance offends me, what an idiot
If its true that 70% (owners) dont know the PS3 plays DVD or Blu-Ray, that will change. Even Disney is advertising their movies on Blu-Ray then at the end saying playable on the Playstation 3. -Cars, Ratatoille(sp?), Meet the Robinsons, this will go on and Spider Man 3 is being advertised the same way. Unless people are hiding in caves you cant help but know the PS3 plays Blu-Ray!
Its actually too bad for Universal. They could make much more money with Blu-Ray! I cant wait to see sales figures for Blu-Ray comparing Spider Man 3 to Transformers. (even though many people have said Spider Man 3 was a let down I bet it will outsell Transformers!) I bought the Trilogy and it rocks!
Not even Transformers release on HD DVD gave them a victory for that week. Come on fool HD DVD is done for
lol didn't they get paid outta their rears to drop blue ray, them an paramount ????
he must be friends with the "experts" from the previous review
This is the only studio I want to join the blu-ray side
i doubt actually they are hurting at all. seeing as a ton of cheap stand alone players have been sold for hd-dvd and will be this christmas and there are waaay fewer hd-dvd movies out there all those people will likely end up choosing at least one or two universal movies. yeah...we sell some expensive hd-dvds to a dying format and then when blu-ray wins we then get to switch formats and resale all those movies on blu-ray. think about it...they really win either way. it is toshiba will be the one to lose not universal.....we all know as soon as they release their movies on blu-ray they will get all those sales too. so now they get to double dip.
as far as him rehashing the same crap that toshiba said about the ps3 owners not knowing it could play blu-ray movies....everyone and their dad knows that isn't the case. just repeating the company line.
Universal realy need to fire this guy he is an idiot how is costing them unnesasary amounts of money for nothing, and you would have to be blind and half retared to think that HD-DVD will even come close to beating Blu-Ray, what a waist of theres and evertone eleses time, Hopefully they figure it out soon.
Sounds like either Toshiba or Microsoft wrote a large check because the reasoning for not going Blu-Ray is old debunked FUD.
lol
Since when does someone drop $5-600 bucks on a system they hardly know about? Any numbers that come form research regarding his claims, must be from people who don't actually play PS3, but people who bought them just to resell and make a profit. He has an invested interest in the success of HD-DVD. That's why he's broadcasting negetive, false information about Bluray and Sony.
Well what he iz tryin to say people....iz that HD DVD will make a comeback in five years....so lets see if blu-ray will fade away so that HDDVD can come in the picture...Pretend that blu-ray not around...then HDDVD is winning.....that is what he is trying to tell everyone!!!
Has no one told these idiots that if you don't have something inteligent to say, don't say it at all? I mean come on. Universal must think that PS3 owners are retarded or something. 70% don't know it plays DVD's? WTF!!! Even if that is the case, I bet 100% know it plays a truly superior HD format in Blu-Ray. The fact that players are going to be 199 and that the porn industry supports HD-DVD is kind of scary. The latter should be considered a bigger threat for sure. But back to the meat of this. Execs need to get their heads out of their behinds and realize people are not dumb. We are educated about our purchases and choose to go with the best options available.
If it were not for Sony's adding the Blu-ray player to the PS3, none of you would own one!!! It's the only reason sales exceed that of HD-DVD! HD sales were outpacing the BD sales until the PS3 was released. Most of you are following your console makers choice blindly without even knowing the facts. Why is BD superior to HD? Please spare me the size debate... How many times have you bought a special edition DVD and found 2 discs? Why 2 discs? Think it was because of room?? NOPE!! DVD's can handle multiple layers and dual sides, yet most studios rarely use the 17 gigs on the disc. BD's and HD's will do the same thing... just you wait!!! HD-DVD has plenty of room especially given that the VC-1 codec is far superior than the decade old MPEG 2 codec, and can store the same 1080p content with less room (and better quality) than a Blu-ray using mpeg. It's funny how I hear conversations in Circuit City between store employees and customers and how Blu-ray supports full HD (1080p). Well here's something for those uninformed employees... SO DOES HD-DVD. The last time I heard such hype from Circuit City about new technology was in the mid 90's when they were pitching the greatest product to ever hit retail, the DIVX PLAYER! According to one employee... they were selling like hot-cakes, and I was crazy to not pick one up. Well we all know where DIVX players sit today... next to the Beta Max players in the antiques store. Don't get me wrong... I want a universal standard for next gen movie content, but I don't agree with Sony's move to go against the same group that created the DVD, then go out and create a format far more pricey and confuse the average consumer with two competing formats. Most Xbox owners do not have the HD-DVD add-on simply because add-ons are always a hard sale, and secondly because Xbox Live Marketplace offers HD movie and HD television downloads, which actually may put this whole format war behind us once and for all. I'm tired of scratched discs... give me digital downloads any day. On a separate note... Sarad Jackson needs to proof read his article before posting. Spell checking wouldn't have caught "one the format war". Just a thought...
On one hand I can understand how Universal would think that Sony hasn't made as much of an impact with the PS3 as expected. But then again, the main reason for this was due to price. Now that the price has finally dropped and the system is more affordable, with better games out and coming out, things WILL change. The slick new marketing campaign is a step in the right direction and with Sony NOW promoting Blu-Ray comes packed in conusumer's minds will change and they'll start looking at the PS3 as a value rather than a burden. It's no mystery that the 360 is more expensive when you add all the things the PS3 can do out of the box but no one seems to see that. All they see is a system that had a year to screw up and is now doing better because of it. But with this new marketing campaign and a new price point it won't be long before Sony is sitting in the driver's seat again. We won't be having these same discussions this time next year. Sony will be back on top and Blu-Ray will be the obvious choice. Universal, prepare to eat crow.
That guy has no clue. Maybe if you were putting your money and development into Blu-ray, you could do all of the same features, and have a ton more space to boot. I think that he just doesnt want there movies to launch on multiple HD-DVDs and one BD.
Warner Brothers also stated this week that they would not be going solo with Bluray and was happy with HD-DVD... Meanwhile Walmart are doing crazy promo's on Toshiba HD-DVD players for $98 and in Australia you can get 10 movies bundled with a Toshiba at JB Hi Fi. Those saying Toshiba are desperate... Toshiba who acquired Westinghouse Electric is now buying out the SA nuclear energy company having outlayed R $150 Billion on capital works - similtaneously Toshiba are building a $3 Billion factories expanding its memory business with SanDisc Corp and buying out Sony's Cell Manufacturing... doesn't sound like a desperate company does it?
NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS
I am sad to say that Sony today announced it was closing down all R&D projects around the Cell Processor and removing themselves from the Cell Consortium completely... Here is the official word:
Sony Corp to exit chip development deal with IBM, Toshiba - report
TOKYO, Nov 07, 2007 Sony Corp, plans to withdraw from its research project with IBM Corp and Toshiba Corp to develop manufacturing technologies for next-generation semiconductor chips, the Nikkei reported on Wednesday.
The move follows the company's decision to sell Toshiba its production facility for the Cell microprocessor, used in the PlayStation 3 video game console, the business daily said.
Under the project, the three companies are researching and developing materials and technologies necessary for the manufacture of chips with line widths of 32 nanometers or narrower.
This project began in late 2005 and is scheduled to run until the end of 2010, the report said.
In addition, Sony plans to cancel capital investments in production facilities for the 45 nanometer or any later generations of the Cell microprocessor, it said.
Thats it then...
