Unreal Tournament 3 has 3.5GB optional install?

Posted on November 18th, 2007 at 03:54 EDT

We're psyched, you're psyched - Unreal Tournament III is almost upon us. The game, which is based of one of the finest multiplayer experiences of all time, is set to have incredible graphics (touted as "better than Gears" by Epic), more of a campaign than in the past, and a rockin' online mode that should keep you hooked for months.

With that in mind, you start to look at three to four seconds quite differently. When you experience a load time three seconds shorter 1,000 times, you save yourself almost an hour in front of a loading screen. That time could be used to take a walk, play a sport... or play some more UTIII of course.

Epic knows that, as Mark Rein shared on their forums.

"Yes there is an install option which places a bunch of the commonly used content on your hard drive to speed up loading and texture streaming times a bit. It does not install everything - you still have to put the disc in the drive to run the game. The install is absolutely not essential. The game runs just fine from the Blu-ray and load times aren't bad but if you're going to play the game a lot, and you've got an extra 3.5GB on your hard drive, then you might as well do the install because the few seconds you save here and there will add up over time."

While that's a vast amount of space, you're under no obligation to install the game. Choices are just great, aren't they?

We're just going to tell you right here, right now. It won't have in-game XMB, so stop complaining. With that out of the way, Eric Lempel has stated on the Official PlayS...

Now I would like it if I can install EVERYTHING on my HDD and run it from there, with the BD of course for digital-rights purposes! Games like Motorstorm should've had that!

Loading time is an issue with the PS3?  I didn't know that.  Anyway, it's great to hear Epic is putting together a real big hit.

That sucks. I wonder if XBox fanboys don't have reason afterall when they say the BR drive is slow.

Games should run directly from the BR. Ps2 didn't had a HD drive and it worked well. I feel I'm taking a step back if I have to install part of the games on my HD. Why don't they take lessons from Shadow of Colossus? Zero loading times, and a BIG BIG BIG map...

Options are a must this gen and Im glad to see that UT3 offer options where they can. Many other devs need to catch on & allow the user to customise to their personal preferences, most especially ( as stated in the forums before) the controls configurations. As for load times,........ they can't be all that bad, but at least you have the options. And as for SOTC, although it was a beautiful game (especially for the power of the PS2) and had very big maps, what else was there to load in? Not very much, so its no wonder the load times were minimal. Fanboys can cry unnessecary & slow all they want, but the space is there. More than enough to increase load times & have plenty left over to fit in much more content. if you don't like it, then I honestly don't see many people caring. I don't like Spinach, but you don't see me moaning about it & trying to convert or slating vegetarians.;)

Not really necessary but they leave you choice, something some companies aren't obviously taking to heart correctly nowadays. >_>

3.5GB is nothing. Oblivion installs 4.2GB and the new Oblivion GoTY version installs 5.4GB

that's not too bad but remember that you don't need to do it so if its to much space don't do it

@2 Loading time isnt a ISSUE epic just went out their way to lessen it even more.

@3 U obviosly havent seen any vids on UT3 because u know dat this game is like 20x greater in detail, causing a must for loading time.  Also they said its only like a couple of secs so it cant be all that bad.  Although I feel installing may be an issue for me however considering i have like 2gs left on my 60g ps3 but I could always delete a couple of demos or movies on my ps3 :).

Niiiiiice, loading times need to vanish this gaming generation, and this is the way to go :-D. If a 1TB 2.5'' HDD was available, and there was an option to install an entire BluRay disc and only need to place it in to verify you own it, the games would kick the last bit of crap out of the X360, making it lose FOR GOOD.

Although someone needs to develop Homebrew to run XBOX 360 games on the PS3, so we won't miss out on "XBOX 360 exclusive" games. ;-)

That's a good idea really. Not necessary but for those who just want those extra few seconds then they can have it. I like it.

I hope that was a joke. You do know that the homebrew exploit for the 360 was just to run burned games on the 360, right?

Emulating a 360 on a ps3 would be near impossible. I say near because i guess you could do it, but the game would probably run at 2 fps and be missing most of the texturing.

I mean common, Sony themselves can't even emulate ps2 through software without spending crap loads of cash.
