Valve confirms changes for Team Fortress 2

Posted on January 16th, 2008 at 09:04 EDT

Team Fortress 2, part of the Orange Box collection of games is one of the better online shooters for PlayStation 3, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Call of Duty 4 and Warhawk.

However, this by no shape or form means that the game is perfect and could never benefit from upgrades. As a result, this has led developer Valve to place the game under the knife and improve upon some of its features.

In addition to including new maps (which may only come to the PC version - we're still waiting for confirmation on this), Valve plans to upgrade the all the player classes and Pyro. Robin Walker of Valve explains:

"We are indeed investigating Soldier changes, and one of the changes we're trying out is focused on making Soldiers a little more careful firing their rockets at point blank targets. As for the Pyro scoring, we have a minor tweak coming down the pipe.”

“He's going to get a small amount of points for every enemy he ignites. This should reward you for those moments where you drop into the middle of an enemy pack and light them all up, hurting them all and disrupting their plans, but not managing to actually kill them."

Stay tuned for more developments as they break.

psn id: gingo..... i am still gutted that Valve didn't make this for ps3 and shoved it off to EA becasue i've heard team fortress is terrible on ps3 and if they had made a good job the orange box would have been a day one buy for me

Rented the orange box. Was really excited to play TF2. What did I get? A very cool style FPS but with terrible lag. Played it for a couple hours then returned it cause the lag was so bad. There was no reason that game shouldn't have been running as smooth as silk. Thanks EA for putting out another laggy pile of crap.

gingo i can say team fortress 2 isnt crap on the ps3 and works rather well with lags  sorting themselves out which is rare anyway to get a lagg or due to the users connection. and jsut because ea made it your an idiot not for purchasing orange box if you havent paleyed half life 2 before or the other this should still be a purchase for anyone due to its sheer brilliance. i wont say its without out its problems al though the episodes and portal and team fort is flawless apart from perhaps slightly long loading times but this isnt a major issue. as with half life 2 ut has completely froze on me once and i had to go back and do the previous chapter again but was no ibggy just save before your go into our benifactors level near end. buy this game

how about fix PS3 version first? i knew about that thread they started in their own froum is just a publicity stun to avoid the massive negative talk about the company's lack of commitment to the PS3 platform.

I love this game. I play this at 2560 x 1600 resolution all settings on high and it runs smooth as silk at around 110 - 130FPS all day. I have a few buddies with 30" displays running that resolution (thats double the res as 1080p) and both a standard HD3870 or range of 8800GT / GTS will do the job as well as my setup. and that gentlemen is how gaming is done!

For those not kitted out on PC yet. Look at any motherboard with x38 chipset just buy a cheap Q6600 and then end of this month buy a single HD3870X2.....Later when you want to go a little crazy add a second HD3870X2 and it will give you four x RV670 GPU's (each one is about 75% more powerful than a PS3) plus.... a total of 4GB DDR4 Video memory.... The crazy thing is - this isnt anywhere near the most powerful for the year. ATI RV770 GPU's (ETA 8 months) are each 30% better than the RV670, and Nvidia have the GT200 (ETA year end) which will eat a single 9800GT (ETA: 2 months) which in turn is 30% better than the current 8800GTX Ultra which is about double a PS3's GPU (PS3 is similar to a 7600GT)... IE: no one should expect to play PC games on the PS3 - you dont need it to either. Consoles are a different category of gaming and for consoles that are quite cheap it's all about quality gameplay not graphics right?

Get a PC for 2560 x 1600 resolution gaming & best AI & Graphic settings and a PS3 for good mid range 1080p / 720p resolutions and good console controls & unique titles. But if given a choice of Call of Duty 4 on PC or PS3 then you know which platform you would choose right...? The same applies to team fortress 2. Just dont worry about comparing frame rates, number of multiplayers, level & mod add ons or screen resolutions. If you play a lot of games then you can save on the cost of games (titles are less of a rip off, and are about 20 - 30% less expensive as PS3 versions but are usually bigger & better in every way) You just need the entry fee for PC gaming - just get a better job...

Wow, Cleaner. I don't know if the point of your post was to brag about your fcking PC or to bash the PS3. We all know you can dish out over 2,000 dollars a year on a gaming PC to keep it updated, and yet you still don't have a processor as powerful as the Cell. Pathetic. All you have to brag about is your video card that costs more than my PS3, PC, TV, and monitor combined and yet your games look mildly better than on my PS3? And the PS3 is going to be kicking out physics and such better than yours? I'd take PC gaming if you gave it to me, but I'm not going to spend that much on a gaming experience I don't even enjoy as much as the most powerful consoles.

Why people bother to register at PSU just to come here and bash the PS3, and praise crapy PCs and the Xbox?

Hey Lithgow.....RSX the "Reality Synthesizer" from the 4th dimension...LOL

Who cares if PS3 isnt as powerful as a PC - it doesnt have to be. Get over it & chill out.

I'm still amazed at seeing Super Mario Galaxy - that game is excellent fun and its running on something half as powerful as a PS3 - again who cares? If the game play is well thought out and the developers are not lazy they can turn out games that are absolutely fantastic on any platform.

The Cleaner - It's quite funny because you talk about getting a PC for running FPS games.

I tend to agree that consoles are pretty crap for the FPS games but I wouldn't bother with driving games etc on a PC so it's a trade off more or less.

I would like to see some console type games come out instead of PC game clones on the current consoles.

While your've gone for an ATI GFX card I wouldn't bother with their current crop as they are quite slow compared to the new Nvidia GFX cards.

@xtago

Your right Nvidia have got the best cards at the moment. The 8800's are faster by a good measure at the top end and both GT & GTS offer good value for money. It will be interesting to see how the new generation GPU's perform from both sides. I'm only suggesting HD3870's as the CrossFire matched with a reliable X38 based motherboard is a little cleaner at present and the GPU's run a bit cooler. Its a good start for those getting into PC gaming for the first time.

As for PC & Consoles - yep I agree. I would never buy a racer like Burnout Revenge, or a shmup like Gradius, or a flight shooter like Ace Combat, or a platformer like Jak & Daxter on a PC - its just not at home on a PC and will never feel as good to play. Those kind of games have that unique gameplay & control feel thats just made for consoles.

Similarly FPS games like Call of Duty, Team Fortress, Crysis, UT3 or big RTS games like Command & Conquer & Supreme Commander , a Flight Simulator or Complex Adventure games are really best played on a PC.

As for comparing the two...its never going to be a competition as the PC will always be more powerful...but does that matter?

Some people got disapointed when they realised that PS2 wasnt as powerful as they thought - some fans are still in denial that its got less GPU & CPU than Gamecube and was always less than an average Windows 98 box. As for me - I didnt get upset at all because I knew before I bought the PS2 that it was all hype. I never purchased it expecting anything other than a great crop of RPG's, some cool rythm games like Frequency, Rez, and Amplitude a couple of silly (in a good way) Karaoke numbers plus some funny platformers...Im still happy with PS2 even though my mobile phone is now more sophisticated. Hence it's good if people finaly look past the hype and dont expect PS3 to be as powerful as what was advertised. Truth is - its not that powerful. But it should bring us a lot of fun....and thats what really counts.
