Wal-Mart to support Blu-ray exclusively

Posted on February 15th, 2008 at 16:09 EDT

HD DVD is on death row.

Now that's a rather bold statement, but the United State's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, has just announced that its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores will now be carrying Blu-ray products exclusively.

They will phase out HD DVD over the next several months, attempting to sell their remaining stock, while carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines on the gained shelf space.

"We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, Senior V.P., Home Entertainment, Wal-Mart, U.S. "With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term. We anticipate enhancing our selection with continued great values in hi-definition Blu-ray products, so our customers can further enhance their entertainment experience at home."

The Warner Bros. announcement has had quite the impact on the outcome of the format war, with Wal-Mart being one of many recent companies (Best Buy, Netflix) to announce Blu-ray as either their favored or exclusive format.

It seems only a matter of time now until HD DVD officially drops out of the race. Recent rumors have indicated that Toshiba will surrender and move to Sony's dominant Blu-ray format soon. We'll keep you updated.

How many nails does it take to close this coffin already? HD-DVD is like a walking dead zombie already, and so it seems are their die-hard backers, To$hiba, M$, Paraversal, and Zombie fanboys. Just go to the light already, sheesh.

"We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases,"

Translation: We hear our customers who bought into the HD-DVD format complain to us as to why we don't have this or that movie title.

"With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term.

Translation: We want to reduce as many HD-DVD player returns as much as possible because we don't want to be SOL.

Kicking teh HD-DVD corpse again? :P

I read an article just today where Toshiba is quoted saying that they will "look into how market trends are going and decide how to proceed in the matter" ... which pretty much means, they're jumping ship, eh?

I feel sorry for all those guys that bought HD-DVD players, this must really suck for them. I think some of them guys at Paramount are going to get fired for ever advising them that HD-DVD was the better choice. I'l be glad when all the studios have finaly turned blu and then we can have all our favourite movies available to purchase:) What does this mean for microsoft though? Major losses on thier add-on HD-DVD player? They would be at a serious disadvantage next generation if they dont have a high definition movie player in their console. Would they try to better blu-ray somehow? They cant put a blu-ray drive in it can they? or they would have to pay sony for every next gen xbox that was sold. I would very much like to see what cards microsoft have to play.

hey i have a question, does sony fully OWN the blueray format? and if so, if microsoft decided to release a blueray upgrade for the 360, does that means tha they'd need sony permission? or pay royalties or somthin?

Toshiba's HD-DVD might as well give up. They are fighting a loosing battle. All of the other movie production companies should just go Blu-Ray also. If Microsoft would have installed HD-DVD in the 360 from the beginning, the format war could be favoring HD-DVD right now, but now Blu-ray is going to win. Sony took a big risk with Blu-Ray but it all paid off.

Oh it is over, and for all of you say that they need to just cut their losses, that is exactly what they are doing.  They have a huge supply of HD-DVDs that they have to unload, so they are trying to sell as many as they can to cut their losses.  Obviously they are no longer producing them.
