HD DVD is on death row.
Now that's a rather bold statement, but the United State's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, has just announced that its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores will now be carrying Blu-ray products exclusively.
They will phase out HD DVD over the next several months, attempting to sell their remaining stock, while carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines on the gained shelf space.
"We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases," said Gary Severson, Senior V.P., Home Entertainment, Wal-Mart, U.S. "With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term. We anticipate enhancing our selection with continued great values in hi-definition Blu-ray products, so our customers can further enhance their entertainment experience at home."
The Warner Bros. announcement has had quite the impact on the outcome of the format war, with Wal-Mart being one of many recent companies (Best Buy, Netflix) to announce Blu-ray as either their favored or exclusive format.
It seems only a matter of time now until HD DVD officially drops out of the race. Recent rumors have indicated that Toshiba will surrender and move to Sony's dominant Blu-ray format soon. We'll keep you updated.

How many nails does it take to close this coffin already? HD-DVD is like a walking dead zombie already, and so it seems are their die-hard backers, To$hiba, M$, Paraversal, and Zombie fanboys. Just go to the light already, sheesh.
die already... no seriusly FU**ing die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The blu light is soon near at the end of this long tunnel.
Hooray for Blu!
The "War" is over and has been. I'm sick and tired of all this, everyone pick a format and move on, that means you toshiba, you're supporting a dead format.
the war never really started, BLU RAYz been up n HD DVDz been down...no match
Die DUD die
blu-ray pay them off; let's sue them...
FYI, I'm being sarcastic
Give it up already, Toshiba. You're fighting a losing battle.
Can I celebrate now? Come on Paramount and Toshiba... We won't hold it against you if you switch now...
Relax everyone nooooooootttttttt this war was long dead long time agon toshiba give up
@Deldwen
Ha like if HD DVD were a zombie, wait it is
nails, duct tape, super glue and the tears of Toshiba will seal that coffin
Aye, just saw this come across my RSS agergator

"We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases,"
Translation: We hear our customers who bought into the HD-DVD format complain to us as to why we don't have this or that movie title.
"With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term.
Translation: We want to reduce as many HD-DVD player returns as much as possible because we don't want to be SOL.
@ leeman99
Way to triple post. Deleted.
Kicking teh HD-DVD corpse again? :P
I read an article just today where Toshiba is quoted saying that they will "look into how market trends are going and decide how to proceed in the matter" ... which pretty much means, they're jumping ship, eh?
Hahaha, jesus when will this hd-dvd vs blu-ray end? Blu-ray already won when Warner Bros. switched so really hd-dvd is done for.
if you thought th BB announcement was bad for HD-DVD this is killer as I'm sure Target, CC, and many other national retailer will follow very soon.
lol toshiba will perform hirakuri before surrendering to the BLU BEAM OF DEATH
HD-DVD goes the route of Beta MAx...a slow but ultimate death!
domination. Just give up HD DVD. I love how G4 thought bluray was gunna be the next betamax. of course.. they only said it to kill the ps3's image. haha. epic fail.
psn id: gingo.... the coffin was securely nailed down months and months ago this is just the mourners leaving the cemetary
HD DVD has some serious Juggernaut going on.
Guys, we are out of room on the coffin, no more nails...LETS BURN IT!!! Take out the corpse and beat it with twizzlers or something.
And Lithgow, Juggernaut is over, they are on the last stand...double perked.
I feel sorry for all those guys that bought HD-DVD players, this must really suck for them. I think some of them guys at Paramount are going to get fired for ever advising them that HD-DVD was the better choice. I'l be glad when all the studios have finaly turned blu and then we can have all our favourite movies available to purchase:) What does this mean for microsoft though? Major losses on thier add-on HD-DVD player? They would be at a serious disadvantage next generation if they dont have a high definition movie player in their console. Would they try to better blu-ray somehow? They cant put a blu-ray drive in it can they? or they would have to pay sony for every next gen xbox that was sold. I would very much like to see what cards microsoft have to play.
Let us do the happy dance!
holy crap toshiba needs to cut their losses
im not even kidding i just want to break its skull open and kick the blood in its face... REALISTICLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DIIEEEEEEEEE DIEEEEEEE... PSU im sewing you if u put up another HD-DVD loss.....
Sony must be laughing.
Toshiba's HD-DVD might as well give up. They are fighting a loosing battle. All of the other movie production companies should just go Blu-Ray also. If Microsoft would have installed HD-DVD in the 360 from the beginning, the format war could be favoring HD-DVD right now, but now Blu-ray is going to win. Sony took a big risk with Blu-Ray but it all paid off.
I finally don't have to listen to all the XBots at work talking about how HD-DVD is going to make a big comeback. Even they can't argue with Wal*Mart going Blu! Game...Set...Match.
Seriously, how many times do you guys have to write its over or in the coffin? Write it when its actually dead not before hand, its getting old to read.
we' ve nailed the coffin, dug a hole, and burried it. now its time to drop a nuke on it!
Another one bites the dust!!
lmfao ...it's over
Oh it is over, and for all of you say that they need to just cut their losses, that is exactly what they are doing. They have a huge supply of HD-DVDs that they have to unload, so they are trying to sell as many as they can to cut their losses. Obviously they are no longer producing them.
Rememeber guys "Its not over, till its over"
and microsoft want to intergrate a hd-dvd drive into thier console's, LOL!!!!
Maybe HD-DVD writers will be cheap enough to copy the occasional Bluray
It's raining blu! Alleliau!
Blu-ray FTW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HD-DVD is dead. Deal with it.
Sony needs to have a giant Blu-ray sale to end it with a bang.
