Warhawk nearly unsharable; Sony responds

Posted on August 28th, 2007 at 20:00 EDT

As many PS3 gamers may have noticed by now, the newly released Warhawk isn't sharable. At least, not by the standards we've become accustomed to. While Warhawk can be downloaded on up to five different machines, there are set boundaries on how it can be played. If you put on your reading glasses to view the fine text on the PlayStation Store, you'll see this information:

"One time fee for download or use solely by the purchasing PSN account on up to five PS3 units, with no more than one activated PS3 unit within a 24 hour period. Content may not be used by any other account."

In a comment to Next-Gen.biz, Sony explained their “alternative Digital Rights Management (DRM) policy” for the Warhawk download.

They must “protect our [Sony's] investment” and “maintain our [Sony's] ability to offer a 24-hour free online gameplay experience.” Understandable, as Warhawk must have been a costly game to develop and PSN remains free.

Expect a case-by-case basis for upcoming PSN titles, taking into account “development costs, maintenance cost, server costs and other factors". We'll bet our life-savings that the upcoming Socom download follows in Warhawk's footsteps.

No one should complain It's not like they're ripping anyone off. Sharing was never meant to be a function of the PSN anyway, it's just a loop hole. Besides sharing has become less and less rewarding when you get bumped offline because someone used your account to activate a game they downloaded.

the only problem i see with this is that none of my sub accounts can access the game as a result. my little brother has his own account and can play every other downloaded game. i could care less about having it available on 5 different consoles. why is allowing my brother to play on his account with the retail disc different? get rid of the 5 console deal and allow for full access on one console. seems like common sense. id like to keep my stats as my stats.

You know you can play unranked games right?

I understand people's concerns about the sub account thing and I think it should be allowed for sub-accounts. RFOM and other games do.  Keep it locked to the system tho for sure. I think Sony did fine by this, sub-account issue sucks but I respect their decision. PSN is free and Warhawk is f'in awesome.

Well duh we get free servers.  You guys have probably all seen the cluster pics by now.  That costs money; part of the reason why the game is $40 and not $30 or less.  I do think we should be able to play on a subaccount later.  I mean you can't use on more than 1 machine in 24hrs, so subaccounts would be the same machine.  Whatever, I don't have a subacct and I'm buying the BluRay version tomorrow (BB didn't have in >.<)

its funny how you can download onto 5 different machines, yet not be able to play it on a different account on the same machine. they should have just made it system specific instead of account specific.

I still think if you paid for it, everyone in your household that uses the one PS3 unit should have access.  however, limit it somehow, like inability for rank and such.  But one machine all players.

DRM, gotta love it.  Microsoft does the same stuff with there games to.  The only difference is, you can own a Blu Ray disc copy of the game for 20 bux more.  At least you would be able to take the game to a friends house if you buy the disc.  Or, wait, will the BD have massive amounts of DRM as well that will work the same way as the PSN download?  I bet if it did, you PS3 loyalist would still bow down to Sony  :)  ehhhh!!!!  Whatever.

Sony for sure knew that some people been giving thier accounts to others so, they can take games for free. I wouldnt do it, or give my account to someone that i dont no. But smart move and no one wil listen to it, because if anybody can do it.

Which moron thinks its smart to share a game like warhawk? do you know how stupid that is?? If you dont pay for what you like you wont see it again and if you dont pay for games then in the end there wont be games! think and just pay the normal price! Stop the complaining geez...

Yeah, sony did good. Those people that ripoff sony by sharing games would complain when you had to pay for PSN. They had it coming for a while.
