Way of the Samurai coming to PS3 and PSP

Posted on June 14th, 2008 at 05:07 EDT

With the latest instalment in the Tenchu series moving exclusively to the Wii, don't jump to the conclusion that developer Aquire has forgotten about the PlayStation – quite the contrary, in fact.

According to Famitsu, the company is currently developing a new Way of the Samurai title for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

The magazine states that Aquire has plans to not only update the game's graphics, but the gameplay systems as well, putting great efforts into creating high level character AI.

Also mentioned was a new system that lets players influence the storyline by their actions. On-screen icons will indicate that you can use your weapon during the event and then based on your actions, different consequences will occur.

Outside of the new PS3 title, Famitsu also said that Aquire is developing a PSP version of the original Way of the Samurai title. The port will include ad-hoc wireless play, allowing two players to make use of their favorite characters in free battle. In addition, the title is also said to feature characters from Way of the Samurai 3.

Stay tuned for more information as it breaks.

I prefer TENCHU to this way of the samurai. I played the ps2 version and i wasn't that impressed.Short scenarios and poor battle system spoiled this game.

I am really hope Aquire delivers a great game.Their first next gen Tenchu which was a 360 exclusive was very very poor. Hope they decide to make a better one on the ps3 after they are through with way of the samurai3.

Tenchu was epic. If the devs already proved themselves once with Tenchu, I'm pretty sure we can have faith with their other projects.

That's awesome news. Although, if it is indeed a new Way of The Samurai, why is there a picture in this article of characters from WotS 2?

You know, MGS4 Heavenly Sword, Uncharted and Devil May Cry 4 reminded me how fun off-line campaigns can be.  It's nice to get away from the online BS for a while.  I saw a story on this Afro Samurai game based on some cartoon (never saw it) on Qore.  Games like that and this Way of the Samurai might be my new favorite all over again...if that makes sense.

WotS is basically tenchu without all the sneaking and a storyline that you influence. The only real problem is I question whether they're doing enough to make this a next gen title. You would need up expand the scale of the interaction with the story by a HUGE degree to really make this work as more than just a future bargain bin title.
