Wii received the BBC's iPlayer a few days ago, giving the system access to a dynamic range of online video content. With the PS3 touted as a multimedia machine, it only seems natural that Sony would attempt to implement this technology into their system as well.
As it turns out, both Microsoft and Sony have wanted to implement the iPlayer into their respective consoles, but neither has been able to do so. The BBC's head of Future Media and Technology, Erik Huggers, provided some insight into the situation.
"If you want to get [iPlayer] on the PlayStation or Xbox, they want control of the look, the feel and the experience; they want it done within their shop, and their shop only," remarked Huggers.
Darren Waters, the BBC's technology editor, commented on the irony of the debacle.
“How ironic that it is the Nintendo Wii, and not the PlayStation 3 nor Xbox 360, that becomes the first of the current generation of consoles to have a truly dynamic range of online video content,” said Waters on his blog.
“The BBC's announcement of a deal with Nintendo to put the iPlayer's streaming service on the console makes something of a mockery of claims by Sony and Microsoft that their consoles are the true multimedia machines.”
If Sony loosens up and gives some room for creative control, this situation may change. If not, we may never see an official version of the iPlayer on a PlayStation platform which would be a true shame.

The PS3 doesn't need the iPlayer (whatever it is) just to be a multimedia machine because the Playstation 3 is really the best gaming multimedia console out on the market and the PS3 already has a slew of multimedia features that the Xbox 360 and Wii don't have. I'd rather have Blu-Ray any day than some iPlayer.
BBC iPlayer unofficially on PS3 too?
On Wednesday we reported that the Wii had become compatible with the BBC's excellent iPlayer that lets you watch BBC shows that have already been aired on TV using your broadband connection. It seems that already someone has got it working on the PS3. Simply by visiting www.PS3iPlayer.comthrough your PlayStation 3's in-built web browser you'll be able to use the system perfectly.
The creator of the website, known as Ixalon says that quite simply, all the website does is "mask your PS3's user-agent string and makes half a dozen changes to make the JavaScript and CSS function correctly on the PS3." Well we could have done that. Seriously though, the site is available only to those using a PS3 from within the UK; an issue with the BBC's service not allowing those outside the country to use the player. Now go and get streaming some TV.
you can turn the ps3 into a dvr with linux but because i doesnt use iplayer its not a multimedia machine??? i fail to see the logic in this
As hill71 has already mentioned you can get it unofficial by going to www.ps3iplayer.com using the ps3 web browser (but only works for peeps in the UK)
Umm, it's a shame, but I kinda don't care much.
cause streaming useless video online makes a mockery of the PS3?? Im sure id use it once in a while if i had it but its definately not a selling point.
you could just go to hulu.com all kinds of free tv and movie content that you can stream to your tv and its perfectly legal
LMAO wel atleast you can use your wii to watch videos beacuase sure noone is using it to play games, the thing lacks games.
mine has been sitting there collecting dust for the past 8 months.
@ edward,
yes but hulu is only available in the u.s.
ohhh tht hulu.co sounds great but only works in us dam it!!!!
U can go to REDCURTAINMOVIE.com on the ps3 and u can watch a new movie like in theater or u can go to Youtube.com on your ps3 to stream a video like there u have it ps3 is the sh** great multimedia devices not even other consoles can do that lmao!!!!!!!
This site is stupid, I tried to make a post and I couldn't as it contained one banned word, but I just couldn't find it and I was not willing to change every word to find where it was.
@shaka
i agree with you big time shaka haha...its a dust collector!!!
First of all the freakin title does not make sense , and secondly i could care less about wii or iPlayer , stop comparing the wii and ps3 . POST SOME REAL NEWS OR DONE FLOOD THE FREAKIN PLACE WITH JUNK !
oh well, i can still watch porn on mine lol so dnt reli matter..
Right and like... 0.2% of Wii owners will even know that the Wii even has online let alone this feature.
Well thats a waste...I dont think many people that own a Wii would use it...its mainly younger people, or big kids :P but i dont think many people will use it on the Wii
I never heard of this IPlayer, but the PS3 does need a upgraded flash player for online use. Alot of the Web Site i visit won't stream videos on my PS3.
wtf is the iplayer.
what is this iplayer anyways?
PS3 is still better for multimedia.
I hate all things that have to have a lower cased i in front of them to be cool.
Hey you know what? Youtube.
pretty cool, just checked it out an watch eastenders omnibus haha.
Ps3 doesnt need this what ever is called. Wii is the must garbage machine i have ever seen. Campare Ps3 to what is does Wii is nothing and just waste of time. Ps3 is very active, better and doesnt need that. Wii needs it, because Wii has no games and all games are recycle and the different is only 2 percent with WII games.
Stupid a**holes at bbc.
Lol, the owner of this thing sounds like a wii fan boy. I doubt SONY needs to pursue such a partnership any how.
Dont you have to now pay for the Wii's web browers...? I havnt turned the damn thing on in months!
Who cares about iPlayer. BBC is not good television. I am English and except for Dr Who never watch anything on pulp TV run by the state. Better to have movie dowloads like Apple iTV.
I use a PC based media center because Sony are to anal about control and throw up too many hurdles and brick walls. Sony do too much spyware, drm and dodgy advertising crap. I cant trust them. I use my PS3 for playing a few games and dont have any interest in buying into anything else other than games.
Who cares? thats my question.
Meh, they need to back down and not be so stingy. Maybe do a few things their way, but stop being like Microsoft!
screw that, the ps3 should get what the other console's wouldn't even think of having,AIM,if the sony were to think about installing this into the ps3 that would be so awesome, and so many ps3's would sell like a street pharmacist does!!
SHAME ON YOU PS3!!!!!! sarcastic ... what an idiot.. does the wii play blu-rays? im pretty sure the wii cant do lots of things the PS3 can ... its a multimedia machine... dont care what the jelous guys from the wii say.
who really cares about this? i would much rather watch blu-rays and play my video games in high def
i don't care. I'm not in the UK.
Wii still sucks. HA HA
As another person said, if you are in the UK, you can get the iplayer on your PS3 also from www.PS3iPlayer.com. They have unofficially found a way to get it through your PS3.
What is Iplayer? sounds really stupid and pointless something like a wanttobe I Pod. I don't need it wouldn't use it.
PSN: DarkJ3JB
Just to update on this currwent subject, (maybe PSU can put it in as an update)
The Head of digital media technology at the bbc has written about the PS3iplayer.com and he says he's impressed, he also says that iplayer on the ps3 is being investigated and WILL BE LAUNCHED IN DUE COURSE!!!
